Island / Lyle is one of three video works shot in Newfoundland (Canada) in remote places – inside the modernist International lounge of Gander Airport and on Fogo Island off the northeast coast of the island of Newfoundland.
Fogo Island is an isolated place, although it’s contemporary studios for art residency programs aims to international artists are inscribed in the contemporary art world. Four contemporary architectures are scattered on this picturesque Island. Shot in the loneliness of winter and blowy weather, the camera alternates between interior shots of the geometric empty pavilions and exterior shots in the windy landscape. A young boy is wandering around, performing improvised martial arts gestures. The emptiness of the studios and the only figure in a combat position could be interpreted as the struggle tied to the creation process and it’s abstraction, or the struggle in an uncertain World. We may leave the Island with a strange feeling about what we encountered.
